Competencies
"the practical skills needed for business and life. This includes communication, collaboration, leadership, critically thinking, acting ethically, managing people and projects, and creating opportunities."
Communicate
Mays business school believes that communication is a key skill to learn in order to be a respected person in business. Communication requires the ability to present to others ideas in a clear and concise way.
Work with Others
Mays also advocates the importance of knowing how to work with others in business. Business affairs involve interaction with many people on a daily basis, so it is critical to learn how to collaborate with others in an effective manner.
This Ted talk discussess how to communicate effectively. Sound expert Julian Treasure demonstrates useful vocal exercises and shares tips on how to speak with empathy.
Lead
Mays business students understand the value of being a leader in a business environment. Leadership skills are developed when a person learns to take initiative in every business situation and to lead their peers by example.
Think Critically
One framework that Mays faculty instills into their students is Bloom's Taxonomy, which encourages them to go beyond the level of simply taking in information and to learn how to expand on the knowledge they acquire. Thinking critically is exactly that: learning how to take information given to us and analyzing it. It is important in business to know how to solve problems and how to think outside the box.
Act Ethically
Mays teaches that in the world of business, their students not only need an ethical mindset, but also need to learn the skill of acting ethically. Unfortunately, it is very easy to cut corners and take advantage of others in the world of business. A&M students learn the value of acting ethically at work, as it earns respect and trust from others.
Manage People and Projects
Mays students are taught that skills in managing people and projects are extremely important in business. Maximizing collaboration and considering every diverse background and opinion when making a decision requires great managing abilities. When a business person is able to manage well, business is conducted more efficiently.
Create Opportunities
Lastly, A&M business students are taught the skill of creating and seizing opportunities. The world of business is extremely competitive, so the only way to rise above others is to create opportunities for yourself. Creating opportunities requires the extra effort that others are not willing to put in as well as ideas that will make yourself stand out.
